A highly collectable Essex crystal brooch depicting a delightful face of a fox, all crafted in solid 18ct yellow gold.
Dating from the late Victorian period, the gold brooch is completely hand carved with wonderful scrolls and details. Centre stage is a hand painted Essex crystal depicting a very handsome fox, so lifelike in form and detail, complete with tiny little whiskers, red fur and pink tongue. It is in beautiful shape and all original condition with some paint slightly faded in parts within the setting (expected for its age). The crystal measures 13.6mm in diameter and the whole brooch is 31.2mm long - it is fully functional as a brooch with a secure pin.
Essex crystals are created through an intricate process in which the image is carved in reverse onto the flat back of a dome crystal and then carefully painted by hand, producing a miniature scene. There’s a brilliant depth and realism beneath the smooth domed surface making these pieces little miniature works of art and thus highly desirable during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.
